Te Orewai Pipiwai Community Kaitiaki

Te Orewai is the Ngati Hine hapu located in Pipiwai, through to Kaikou.  We are a rurally isolated valley, 40kms NW of Whanagrei. The Trust manages 7000acres of whenua maori freehold whenua for over 1000 shareholders and beneficiaries that was seized by Maori Affairs in 1965.  We have 3000 acres of contiguoius native forest along our wwestern boundary.  We are surrounded on 3 of 4 siddes by large forestry companies, including Hancock's, Holyoake's and Ngati Hine Forestry.

Protecting and preserving our taonga forests, trees, plants, birds, etc is a key aspiration for Te Orewai. Pest eradication is an important tool to protect and preserve our ngahere, but we are only working at individual land owner initiative, without much resource at all.
